Who is this permit for?

Temporary residence permit holders may NOT engage in paid activities.

However, as an exceptional case, you may request authorization from the National Migration Service (SERMIG) to engage in specific and sporadic activities as public entertainment or sports personnel, lecturer, advisor, or expert technician, for which you will receive remuneration or financial benefits in Chile or abroad.

You may also engage in paid activities if you enter as a border zone resident, only if the bilateral agreement with the bordering country so establishes. *

This authorization will be affected by the payment of fees, except for those cases specified in Article 51 of Law No. 21,325 on Migration and Foreigners.

Where and when should this work permit be requested?

The application for Work Authorization for holders of Temporary Stay is made in the Digital Procedures Portal of SERMIG, entering with ClaveÚnica or with the account created by the applicant, the representative or employer for these purposes.

Important:

You must submit the application at least on the business day prior to the start of paid activities and during working hours (Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Chilean time). Otherwise, the application date will be considered the following business day.

Requirements

  1. Valid identity document: image of the identification page with which you entered or will enter the country (passport, Identity Card, DNI, etc.) where your identification data, number, date of birth, date of issue and expiration of the same are legible. If you enter with a DNI or ID card, you must attach an image of both sides of the document.
  2. Temporary Stay Visa or prior authorization if applicable.
  3. Valid Single Migration Card (TUM), where your identification data and date of entry into the country or entry stamp into the country in the passport are legible (*)
  4. Notarized letter from a Chilean company or employment contract from a Chilean company, signed by both parties, legalized with the company with which you require authorization to carry out paid activities, with the following information:
    • Individualization of both parties.
    • Specification of functions and place of performance.
    • Specific dates for which you request the Work Permit (from – to).
    • Include a clause stating the following: “The obligation to provide services arising from this contract, This can only be fulfilled once the worker has obtained special authorization to carry out paid activities in Chile.”
    • Payment of fees when applicable.
(*) In the event that the applicant is requesting the permit within Chile.
  1. Documento de identidad vigente: imagen de la página de identificación con la cual hiciste ingreso al país (pasaporte, Cédula de Identidad, DNI, etc.) en donde sean legibles tus datos de identificación, número, fecha de nacimiento, fecha de otorgamiento y vencimiento de éste. En caso de ingresar con DNI o Cédula debes adjuntar una imagen de ambas caras del documento.
  2. Visa de Permanencia Transitoria o autorización previa si correspondiera, y timbre de ingreso al país.
  3. Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM) vigente, en donde sean legibles tus datos de identificación y fecha de ingreso al país o timbre de ingreso al país en el pasaporte (*).
  4. Copia de Permiso de Trabajo vigente.
  5. Documento firmado ante notario en el que se indique la vigencia y continuidad de tu labor, según lo estipulado en el Permiso de Trabajo vigente:
    • Individualizar ambas partes.
    • Especificar funciones y lugar de desempeño.
    • Fechas específicas para las cuales solicitas el Permiso de Trabajo (desde- hasta).
    • Pago de los derechos cuando corresponda.

General information

Yes, you can extend your Work Authorization, as long as your Temporary Stay permit is valid. The extension may not exceed said validity.
Authorization to carry out paid activities will be subject to the payment of fees, which you can make either before or after your entry into Chile. Payment will be requested from you through the Digital Procedures Portal of SERMIG, when you request authorization.
If you carry out paid activities without the authorization or authorisation of SERMIG, you will be sanctioned with an average fine of five monthly tax units, without prejudice to the cause for expulsion referred to in the recurrence of this conduct, established in Article 127 No. 5 of Law No. 21,325.
